FORMATION OF METHANE COLLECTORS IN THE PROCESS OF UNDERMINING AND OVERMINING COAL SEAMS

Mine methane, once viewed mainly as a safety concern, is now recognized as both a valuable energy resource and a significant greenhouse gas, particularly in regions such as the Karaganda Coal Basin. This study uses an integrated approach combining analysis of global methane drainage practices, rock mass movement and subsidence, gas emission modeling, and in-situ observations. Void volumes formed by bedding separation are estimated as the difference between theoretical and actual subsidence trough volumes and are considered potential methane reservoirs. The proposed model enables spatial assessment of void distribution and supports optimal placement of methane drainage boreholes in abandoned panels, improving methane recovery, reducing emissions, and enhancing environmental sustainability.
